Steam’s Autumn Sale Recommendations

Writer's picture: James SlaterJames Slater

Another season, another sale on Steam. This one seems hefty, with a lot of big games being discounted by rather large amounts. Here I’ll give you some of my recommissions for what games to pick up, and give a little insight into each game as we go.

If you’re new to PC gaming, or a well seasoned veteran looking for a way to play your library on the go, then the Steam Deck is for you. Able to play majority of Steam’s gaming library, the steam deck offers a way to take your gaming on the go and still enjoy with full controller support, touch pads and back buttons. The deck comes equipped with a charger and carrying case, with plenty of accessories options from Steam themselves or third party sellers, such as a dock, skins and internal SSDs. I maintain this is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made, and over two years later it still works like a dream.

If you're a fan of FPS, or of gaming in general, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. Beyond the obvious reason of owning 6 masterpieces for the price of a standard Mcdonald's Meal, owning the game on PC gives you access to numerous fantastic mods, including the recently and meticulously added Halo 2 E3 demo level. Even if you're among the many who have already played these games, it's still worth picking this one up in case the feeling to replay any of these games for nostalgias sake arises.

Whatever you may hear or have heard about Destiny 2's life cycle (most of which may be true), there is no denying that in terms of environments, music, and gameplay, Destiny 2 is one of the best shooters on the market. Purchasing the Light and Darkness collection gives you access to, in my opinion, some of the best expansions in gaming. You receive access to three packs of weapons, armors and raids, and three expansions, with campaigns, gear, raids and locations to accompany them, culminating in approximately 15 hours of story content, six 6-player raid activities, and four dungeons (additional dungeon keys are sold separately). The option remains to play through the two free campaigns, and if you find yourself wanting more, this collection is for you.

Regardless of the choices Sony made given the PSN login issues, Helldivers 2 is one of the most fun and easy to pick up shooters on the market as of now. The premise is simple, defend Super Earth from invading anyone wishing to impede on the democracy of the best planet. Be it bugs or robots, you’re matched with three more of your fellow Helldivers as you do you best to complete any objectives, as you fight against dozens and hundreds of enemies at a single time, which is made ‘easier’ with the use of armaments, calling down from your ship for assistance. There is a reason this game is one of the most played games of the year, and for 20% off, it’s worth picking up and finding out why, and having a great time doing so.

THE looter shooter series. Packaged with six games, and all DLC, this collection is practically a steal for anyone looking for a fun shooter series full with record breaking numbers of loot. Each game puts you in the shoes of a vault hunter, and your objective: finding a vault. Each game contains references to previous games, as characters overlap, though the stories themselves are standalone enough to be enjoyed individually. You’ll play through over a decade’s worth of games, and watch as the fan favorite series progresses into the well known and critically acclaimed series it is.

RPGS to fill the time

Original Price: $59.99

Sale Price: $26.99

If your opinion on this game is sorely the rough shape it was in at launch, it may finally be time to find out how much it has changed since then. A fully immersive FPS/RPG in a city full of neon lights and cybernetic augmentations to feel nearly unstoppable, accompanied by a gripping and emotional story that will take you approximately 40 hours to beat, there is more than enough here to be worth less than half the price. Additionally, if you find yourself wanting to do another playthrough, it could be worth adding the expansion, which is also on sale for $23.99, to your cart and get an additional 20-30 hours to your game.

One of the oldest and most well known RPG series reaches a potential peak in Diablo IV. Even if the top down style isn't for you, I'd recommend giving it a try anyway if you like RPGs, Dark Fantasy, or acquiring nice loot at the end of any battle or activity. As one of the most played games on the Steam Deck you're more than likely going to encounter random players along your journey, and be it if they're the same level as you or decked out in armor from endgame at level 60, it is nice for everyone to come together to defeat a world boss or simply farm for enemies. Additionally, if you crave more hacking and slashing, the expansion, Vessel of Hatred, is also on sale, and be be purchased with the base game for only $45

Dark Souls Series

(Steam Deck Playable/Steam Deck Verified)

Dark Souls Remastered: $19.99, 50% off

Dark Souls II: $19.99, 50% off

Dark Souls III: $29.99, 50% off

A series that requires hardly any introduction, and one responsible for creating its own genre of games. Known as one of the hardest game series' around, each of these games can be played individually, though its best played in release order. Dark Souls I and II come with their DLCs included, however Dark Souls III requires a separate purchase of either the expansions themselves, or the deluxe edition, which adds an additional $22 to your purchase. Between the beautiful environments, the engaging combat or the masterpiece of a soundtrack, you owe it to yourself to pick up at least one of these masterful games.

If you're looking to play the Game of the Year nominee Metaphor Refantazio, or play the iconic Persona series, or to discover the roots of it all with the Shin Megami Tensei series, any of these games are for you. If you are finding yourself in wanting a long game with amazing stories to surrender yourself to, any of these are great choices. You can fight for the sake of saving the prince of the land in Metahphor, grapple between changing the hearts of the corrupt and evil, or save the world from a mysterious occurrence known as the Dark Hour in Persona 5 Royal or Persona 3 Reload respectively. Each of these games are turn based, but they definitely have enough differences between them to stand out amongst the rest and can prove themselves for their various critically acclaimed reviews and nominations.

INDIE DELIGHTS

(Steam Deck Verified)

Original Price: $39.99

Sale Price: $19.99

Savings: 50%

One of the most well known indie games and the outcome of a tremendously successful Kickstarter campaign, this is a personal favorite and is a great addition to the library of any platforming fan. Harkening back to the platformers of the days of old, you take up the role of Shovel Knight, and fight against the grueling Order of no Quarter as you aim to take down the evil Enchantress. However, this is actually a collection of four separate campaigns, where you take control of three separate bosses from the original campaign and go on their own adventures and storylines. Each campaign has enough variations to stand against each other and warrant a playthrough of each. Surprisingly more difficult than it may appear, there is enough challenge to keep you occupied and enthralled in the beautiful pixel art and retro style soundtrack.

Original Price: $19.99

Sale Price: $13.99

One of the most surprising hits of 2022, Signalis is a survival horror game developed by a two person team at Rose-Engine. Inspired by games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, the game's retro graphics and gameplay seem even better considering how small the development team. You control Elster, as you seek out the human pilot of your crashed ship, and have to find was to deal with the various elements of the land, mostly coming in the way of horror-styled enemies and supernatural elements. Given the game's multiple endings, you can choose to use your save states to gather enough for each, or do more than one playthrough, which is recommended, as more starts to make sense as you play it again.

Omori (Steam Deck Playable)

Original Price: $19.99

Sale Price: $13.99

Savings: 30%

Developed by eight people, OMORI is one of the most well known and, originally, skeptical kickstarters. However, what came from this is one of the best indie games ever developed. Tackling subjects such as depression, self harm, anxiety, and suicide, it is understandable that the pixel art style may seem a bit misleading at first. However, if these topics aren't enough to keep you from it, you are in for a fantastic ~20 hour adventure with a great cast of characters and competent RPG elements, harkening to older style games. It is best to go into this game with as little information as possible, as any possible spoiler you may happen upon would get in the way of a truly masterpiece of a game.

(Steam Deck Verified)

If you've spent any amount of time on Twitter or Tiktok, you may have seen this game making the rounds, and for good reason. The game's psychological horror elements play masterfully against its nonlinear story telling and retro style graphics, building into the uneasiness of the game's atmosphere. Like OMORI, this game is best experience without much or any prior knowledge to the story's events. On the shorter side, at approximately two and a half hours, those hours will be filled with unnerving subjects and a gripping and emotional story that will make the already short length seem even shorter.

ULTRAKILL: $18.74, 25% off

That brings us to the end of my personal recommendations for worthwhile pickups during the Steam sale. As I think of more I’ll add into the list, however, I hope this list was helpful in making some choices, and have fun gaming!
